Malaria Partners West Africa

Malaria Partners West Africa (MPWA) was formed through the collaborative partnership between Malaria Partners International and the Rotary District 9101 Subcommittee on Malaria. Based in The Gambia, MPWA serves as a key coordinating body for malaria prevention and control activities across 10 West African Countries: Burkina Faso, Cape Verde, The Gambia, Guinea Bissau, Guinea Conakry, Liberia, Ivory Coast, Mali, Sierra Leone, and Senegal.


Led by a Board of Directors who are Rotarians from these countries, MPWA supports Rotary District 9101's Malaria Committees with Community Impact Grants and coordination for effective malaria control campaigns. MPWA's primary mission is to contribute to the elimination of malaria within these countries, aligning with national efforts and working with international partners to minimize malaria's spread.

The Project

Since the inaugural Annual General Meeting in 2022, MPWA continues to combat malaria through strategic programs and community outreach. MPWA has supported seven Community Impact Grants projects in Mali, Ivory Coast, Liberia, Sierra Leone, Burkina Faso, and the Gambia.

In 2023 MPWA reached nearly 400,000 people through educational and environmental programs, notably with radio broadcasts and billboards promoting malaria awareness. Other 2023 highlights include malaria education in four Sierra Leonean schools and targeted malaria screenings for pregnant women and children under 5 years old in Cote D’Ivoire. 

This progress has been made possible through the continued support of Rotary District 9101 leadership, Malaria Partners International, the Bill and Melinda Gates Foundation, and RAM-Global. Together, zero malaria is possible.

LEADERSHIP

Dr. Emma Bruce

Executive Director

Dr. Emma Bruce is a medical doctor with a passion to eradicate malaria in West Africa. In January 2018, she was inducted as a Charter Member into the newly formed Rotary Club of Bijilo in The Gambia. Later that year she was appointed to the position of Chairperson of the Rotary District 9101 Sub-committee on Malaria.

As Chairperson, Dr. Bruce focused on setting up policies and guidelines for District 9101 around Malaria elimination efforts. Under her leadership, Rotary has spearheaded malaria prevention and control educational campaigns during the Gambia-Senegal 2019 Cross-border Bed et Distribution Campaign through television panel discussions, radio programs and more in order to reach the most remote communities. Since then, Dr. Bruce has coordinated MPI supported Community Impact Grants in The Gambia, Liberia and Mali, with grant proposals for Sierra Leone and Burkina Faso coming soon.

At the end of 2021, Dr. Bruce was instrumental in setting up Malaria Partners West Africa as an MPI affiliate. She established a Board of Directors with representatives from several countries within Rotary District 9101 and serves as Executive Director of this new organization.
