2020 Goalkeepers Report

by | Sep 24, 2020

COVID-19 is impacting nearly every aspect of our lives. We’re all feeling it. But you may not realize that COVID-19 is rapidly accelerating the spread of other deadly diseases that were previously in decline. This is especially true in developing countries where malaria, measles and diarrheal disease are back on the rise.

The Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation has published its 2020 Goalkeepers Report which focuses on the devastating impact of COVID-19 in Sub-Saharan Africa. According to Bill Gates, the report has two goals. “First we analyze the damage the pandemic has done and is still doing—to health, to economies, and to virtually everything else. Second, we argue for a collaborative response.”

As part of the Goalkeepers report is a five-minute video, in which Bill expands on the impact of COVID-19 on malaria, the disease we at Malaria Partners International are committed to eliminate. The five minutes you spend watching this video will illustrate malaria’s widespread devastation on young children, pregnant women, and on fragile developing economies.

2020 Goalkeepers is a tough report to read. At the same time, Bill and Melinda Gates agree – when we all come together, we can tackle even the most daunting of challenges. In 1985, Rotary members accepted the audacious goal of eradicating polio.  Today, we are “this close” and we won’t stop until the job is complete.

Despite the sobering look at malaria’s potentially rising toll, Malaria Partners International is as committed as ever to a world in which no child, no pregnant woman, no person will die of this preventable and treatable disease.
